The Lee Laser Series 800 Nd:YAG Lasers now have been qualified to meet the requirements
of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive defined under European Community
Directive 89/336/EEC. In 1995, Lee Laser submitted a specially prepared Series 800 Laser
to a laboratory approved by TUV Rheinland, for a battery of electromagnetic tests. On
September 30, the tests were completed, and the laser met all of the EMC Directive
requirements. All lasers that are to be shipped into the European Community after 1 January
1996 must contain the modifications and bear the "CE Mark" certification.
Many engineering modifications have been necessary to meet these requirements. These
have required some configurational changes in the design of the lasers, and some price
adjustments. The Series 700 and standard Series 800 lasers do not meet the EMC
Directive. Only specially prepared Series 800 lasers that contain the "/CE" designator as a
part of the model number will meet the EMC Directive.
The attached Declaration of Conformity document will be included in the Operation Manual
of every laser that bears the "CE Mark". The Certificate of Work Done from D.L.S. Electronic
Systems, Inc., that confirms that specially prepared Series 800 Nd:YAG Lasers conform to the
European EMC Directive.
Every major assembly has been affected. In general the modifications include:
a. addition of some electrically conductive enclosures to shield radiative components,
and cable shielding to the umbilical
b. improved electrical ground by replacement of paint and anodization in favor of gold
iridite and black chromate where necessary.
c. addition of EMI and RFI filtering
The summary below lists the major upgrades to the laser design:
1. Head Block Assembly
a. Will be enclosed inside own shielded box. The attached drawing shows the
conceptual design.
b. Use of optical rail carriage will continue.
c. Maximum width is 7" which is the width of the base of the optical rail. This is the
minimum width that is needed to service arc lamp changes.
d. Length: no change to existing dimensions necessary at present.
e. Lamp Cable Connector: only one (1) will be used for both cables. This is necessary
for 360 shielding of the cable into the Head Block Enclosure.
2. Umbilical Assembly
a. Will be double shielded.
b. Total redesign of connector to power supply. Will be shielded.
3. Arc Lamp Power Supply: major internal redesign to accommodate shielding and filtering
requirements. No changes to outside dimensions.
a. Arc Lamp Trigger Circuit: Will be enclosed inside own electrically grounded box. RF
filter added to circuit.
b. Rear Panel: No longer painted. Will be gold iridited for electrical conductivity.
c. Input EMI line filter has been upgraded.
4. Cooler
a. Rear Panel: Q-switch BNC connectors changed to single filtered D-sub type
connector (FCC17 Series).
b. Panel Fastening Screws: All will be changed from black, plastic coated to stainless
steel.
5. Q-switch Power Supply. Internal EMI/RFI filters will be added.
6. Delivery. These are more time-consuming to manufacture. Lee Laser will need a
minimum of 60 days lead time to deliver "CE Mark" lasers
